artisinal CRAFTSMANSHIP with a focus on the ARTISAN
Artisanal basket weavers in the Northern part of Ghana find it difficult to earn a living from basket weaving under the traditional trade model. It can take up to 2 days to produce a market basket and 4-6 days to produce a moses basket. Then individual artisans must spend additional resources to take their products to market where they sell to agents, who sell to wholesalers, who then export around the world to sell to end consumers. Artisans do not typically make minimum wage under the traditional trade model.
Design Dua promotes fair trade and fair wages at or above minimum wage by working directly with individual artisans. By working direct, Design Dua is able to offer artisans fair pricing for their work, training opportunities, stable large purchase orders, and a stable source of quality materials. This not only benefits Design Dua artisans, but it has raised awareness for other area artisans about what they should charge for their work.
HEIRLOOM quality
Design Dua takes great pride in their basket weaving and strives to make products of the utmost quality to last for years to come. Design Dua baskets are well measured, shaped, and protected from fading that occurs with poor quality dying. This is a result of their training techniques and factory finishing process.
Please note that despite the implementation of quality control measures, the handmade nature and natural materials used in these bassinets will result in slight variations in size, pattern, texture, and color that you would not typically find in mass-produced machine made products. These variations add to the beauty and character of the bassinet and are not considered defects.
focus on SAFE SLEEP
Safety is a big reason Petite Merri specifically chose to work with Design Dua. It is easy to find handcrafted artisanal products across the internet, but it is difficult to find handcrafted artisanal products marketed for babies which are actually designed and safety tested per US guidelines for children’s products. This is why the baskets come with a perfectly fitted thin foam pad designed specifically for safe sleep. In line with US guidelines, Design Dua also maintains a product registry, just as other major baby product manufacturers
like Nuna or Stokki, so that they can alert consumers should a safety issue be discovered in the future.
